A number of us from Cambridgeshire were pleased to be able to attend the CTE Forum in Swanwick, Derbyshire, in March 2025. This event takes place every three years and is the main ecumenical gathering of churches across England. It was a great opportunity to find out more about how churches across England are working together – nationally, at a county level and locally. We were treated to a hugely diverse range of speakers, worship and workshops - as well as browsing stalls run by many charities with a national reach.
Many of the sessions were recorded and are available to watch here.
You can watch a 3 minute video of the Forum here.
You can see a photo of the Cambridgeshire participants here.
Throughout January to March 2025 we are sharing in a series of six Bible studies over Zoom, using material prepared by our brothers and sisters in Vellore. The theme of the studies is "Gender Justice" and we have been able to bring together our perspectives and insights from both our contexts.
The studies have been a great way to get to know each other across our time zones!
If you would like to join the Zoom sessions email for more information.
On Saturday 22nd February 2025 we supported an online conference aimed at equipping churches and trainee ministers to know about modern slavery and human trafficking.
It helped those who attended to identify people at risk and to safeguard them. It included contributions from Together Free and Churches Together in Cambridgeshire.
On Sunday 20th October a joyful occasion marked the commissioning by the three partnership denominations (Baptists, Church of England and United Reformed Church) of Beth Cope as minister of the Local Ecumenical Partnership church. The Methodist and Quaker support was also celebrated.
The afternoon featured all-age learning options and a bonfire lit from the Easter candle - and of course cake!
In September three representatives from Churches Together in Cambridgeshire took part in the Churches Together in England conference held in September at the Hayes Conference Centre in Derbyshire. It was a valuable opportunity to form relationships with others working to support Christians working together . It was especially enriching to listen to Rev Dr Susan Durber, the World Council of Churches president for Europe.
Gale Richards, Chair of Churches Together in Cambridgeshire, spoke at the Celebration of Chaplaincy service in Ely Cathedral on Saturday 6th July.
Gale is a patron of Cambridge Workplace Chaplaincy as CTC is very supportive of their ministry. There are close links between our two organisations. The service was open to everyone from all denominations as it was very much an ecumenical event.
We shared our first gathering of LEP church leaders over Pizza on 15th May 2024 at Lighthouse Church, Ely (thanks to them for their hospitality).
It is an important part of our work to support churches where Christians of various denominations are worshipping and serving together. Meeting together in this way led to lots of useful conversations and learning from each other.
On Sunday 28th April 2024 the first service of worship took place in the new Marleigh estate in Cambridge with over 90 people attending. Local Anglican and Baptist churches supported the local residents as they seek to establish a worshipping Christian community on the site.
Mark Burleigh, our Ecumenical Officer, attended and said, "It was great to see local Christians working so well together for the sake of all the residents in the new homes. The Spirit of God is moving!"
International Stories
Over 40 people gathered from around Cambridgeshire, on 29th February 2024, at our International Stories event.
They met to hear stories of how local Christians from different denominations are learning about ministry, mission, and ecumenism through relating to Christians in India, Germany, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, Thailand as well as hearing about the work of Cambridge Centre for Christianity Worldwide.
The event was held at Bar Hill, an LEP church building, and was organised by Churches Together in Cambridgeshire.

Revd Mark Burleigh is a Baptist Minister who has served churches in Sussex and Leicester. In each setting he was an enthusiastic supporter of ecumenical working with neighbouring churches, especially in mission. He sees ecumenical work as an answer to the prayer of Jesus in John 17, that the unity of Jesus' disciples will mean "the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me."
He also has experience in working with diverse Christians in ecumenical chaplaincies in university and healthcare, and has served as a healthcare chaplain for 30 years. He currently also works part-time as a chaplain at a Sue Ryder hospice.
